Title: Teacher
Responsible to: Head of Department, Vice-Principal, and Principal of respective school
Responsible for: All students during school time and assigned class students during lessons

Scope of Teacher Role:

Teachers are, first and foremost, educators. Their mission is to direct and facilitate not only language learning but also the personal development of students in their care, and in the school as a whole. Teachers work individually and as a group to adequately prepare students for life in terms of broadening their cultural awareness, their ability to communicate openly and appropriately with peers and staff, and their international mindedness. Through the efforts of the teacher, students should develop the ability to direct their own learning, the ability to think critically and assess knowledge, and the ability to express themselves in both their writing and orally in an acceptable style.

Teachers should at all times: ensure the safety and welfare of all students irrespective of their levels or ages; provide equal opportunities to all students irrespective of their academic and social background; give value to outside class responsibilities as much as in class; effectively keep parents up to date with their children’s progress through meetings, electronic media and other systems.

Teachers should respect confidentiality at all times, ensure that school property is used appropriately by all, and refrain from smoking on school premises, or in the presence of children.

Specific Aims

To teach the curriculum and assess students’ progress by:

• providing relevant, motivating and stimulating lessons;
• organising students’ learning effectively;
• developing students’ independent learning skills;
• providing and marking homework regularly and giving feedback to students;
• providing guidance to students on further learning, use of library, other computer resources, to further their learning in general;
• evaluating class performance on a regular basis through progress testing focused on the curriculum;
• assessing overall performance through appropriate testing at the end of major learning cycles (semesters);
• integrating modern learning approaches into the curriculum;
• sharing classes with other colleagues (team teaching) as appropriate in order to further students’ learning.

To maintain an appropriate learning atmosphere in the classroom by:

• maintaining appropriate classroom discipline;
• varying pace to match students’ learning abilities;
• using a variety of approaches to match students’ differing learning styles;
• teaching a variety of learning strategies in the classroom to stimulate interest and learning;
• capitalising on students’ interest by using appropriate teaching aids.

To maintain a professional code of conduct at all times by:

• being punctual for school and for lessons, duties and activities, and maintaining required presence throughout all classes;
• maintaining appropriate professional dress;
• following school rules and ensuring that students observe school rules at all times, inside and outside the classroom;
• showing respect for both colleagues and students at all times, even in the face of difficulties;
• maintaining adequate records and keeping paperwork up to date;
• producing required yearly plans, daily plans, attendance records, etc., in a timely and professionally acceptable format;
• attending and contributing to school meetings as required;
• ensuring students have passes when not under teacher’s control but under responsibility.

To develop professionally by:

• developing skill areas to improve students’ learning;
• taking part in workshops;
• taking part in the school appraisal / performance system and contributing to professional dialogue.

To fully participate in school activities as assigned by:

• carrying out school duties as assigned, conscientiously and effectively;
• coaching a house team activity as assigned;
• taking part in reward system activities as assigned;
• monitoring students effectively during main school events such as concerts, ceremonies, graduation days, and school trips.

To communicate the progress of student learning in individual classes to the department, and school as a whole by:

• keeping parents up to date on student progress;
• attending regular level meetings and contributing to discussion of individual students;
• contributing to whole school meeting on curriculum progress;
• contacting the counselor, informing the Head of school, in special cases as required.
